This tune carries some real history — it commemorates the 1691 Battle of Aughrim in County Galway, which was actually the last major defeat of the old Gaelic Irish forces, a bigger bloodbath than the more famous Battle of the Boyne. What's cool is that it became the signature tune of the Aughrim Slopes Céilí Band, a local group who first recorded it around 1936 or 1937, and they reportedly learned it from accordion player Jack Fahy, in whose house their early practice sessions were held. You'll find versions floating around as a march, a slow air, and even a polka, so the mood is kind of up to you. At 120 BPM it sits in a sweet spot where the march feel locks in nicely, and the B part in particular has a lovely rolling quality that rewards letting each phrase breathe a little.
