The Atholl Highlanders was actually written for the Duke of Atholl's personal regiment, which to this day is the only private army still legally recognized in Europe, a tiny ceremonial force based at Blair Castle in Perthshire. William Ross published it as a pipe march in 1869, and the regiment it honors traces back to the 77th Highland Regiment raised in 1778, which spent most of its service garrisoned in Ireland and was eventually disbanded after a mutiny, which is not exactly the glamorous military history the name suggests.
